“. . .  here's my story in a nutshell: I'm in my 3rd year at SUNY Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn. It's going wonderfully. It's a lot of work, but I love what I'm
learning and I couldn't see myself doing anything else at this point. I'm not too sure what I'll specialize in; I'm leaning towards neurology (it must be the influence of my psych/cog sci training at GU!)--maybe pediatric neurology--but this is all very "up in the air" as of now.. . . again, I'd love to answer any questions students might have about the psych/cog sci programs at GU, or about med school.. . . .”

Antonio Gisbert '97, gisbert@northwestern.edu
Major: Psychology, Certificate:  Cognitive Science
Darlene Howard notes:
After GU, Antonio earned an MA in Cognitive Evolution from the University of Reading.  He then worked as a Special Volunteer in Dr. Jordan Grafman's lab at the NIH (National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke) on behavioral studies of implicit learning, before moving to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Carnegie Mellon University where he worked as a Research Associate conducting fMRI studies.  In the fall of 2002, Antonio is beginning work toward his Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience at Northwestern University's Department of Psychology.

“. . .  I am currently about to begin a one year Masters Program entitled Mind, Brain & Education at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. It's quite an intriguing program that is very interdisciplinary and incorporates faculty from the Harvard Psych Department, MIT's Brain & Cognitive Science Department, MIT's New Media Lab, among others. Check out the details on their website at http://www.gse.harvard.edu/~mbe/.  After graduating I took a two year break from school and worked at a fledgling internet start-up which unfortunately did not make it. Since then I have worked for an educational technology company that collaborates with NYC public schools to integrate technology into their curriculum as well as run after school programs in MicroWorlds (LOGO) programming and LEGO Robotics.  Now I am venturing back into the academic world and hope to eventually pursue a PhD. Feel free to list my information in the alumni section and have students contact me. I . . . would welcome the opportunity to be more involved and help in any way. . . .”

“.After graduating I was offered a job as a Program Assistant at the Center
for the Study of Voluntary Organizations and Service (CSVOS), one of the
academic centers affiliated with the Georgetown Public Policy Institute
(GPPI). I was promoted this summer to Program Coordinator and am
responsible for organizing our Waldemar A. Nielsen Issues in Philanthropy
Seminar Series, promoting the public management and nonprofit track course
offerings, providing learning opportunities for our students, and grant
reporting. I plan to enroll in an MBA program in a few years with the ultimate
goal of pursuing a career in nonprofit management.  Students can certainly contact me if they have any questions, etc. ”

“. . . I  just wanted to let you know that I started working in the Lab of
Neuropsychology at the NIMH under Dr. Mishkin. (I actually heard about the position through an email I got from Cog Sci.) I decided to hold off for now on medical school. I've been here for about a month now and it's been extremely interesting. (I even got to see a talk by Dr. Rauschecker) Taking those Cog Sci classes got me hooked on the brain and I'm glad I have the chance now to pursue that interest for a while.. . . . I'm also glad that the cog sci seminars involved professors from all the different departments. I think that it was good that we got exposure to different approaches as opposed to the program being geared toward just pysch or bio. . . . Please let me know if I could help out in any way with the program.”

"Currently, I am working in Shark Bay, Western Australia as a field research assistant to Jana Watson, a doctoral student in Janet Mann's biology lab at Georgetown. We are collecting data on sexual coercion and female mating stratgies in bottlenose dolphins, and although I enjoy collecting data and doing field research, I think I would really like to study neuroscience in graduate school. I have been talking a lot via email with Rachelle Toman, a MD/PhD student who taught part of the section in Diseases and Disorders of the Brain, and I think I really want to gain more experience in the field of neuroscience. After talking w/ Rachelle, I feel like getting a masters degree, possibly at a school that would let me get a masters and then a PhD after, would be a good way to get experience in the field and start my graduate coursework."

"I'm currently in my last year of medical school at the University of Virginia. While I had expected to pursue a residency in neurology, I made the last minute decision to specialize in anesthesiology instead. I chose anesthesia because it seemed like a perfect combination of medicine and neurology, and I also enjoy working with my hands. I'm sure my cognitive science minor at Georgetown has contributed to my interest in a specialty that deals with such topics as consciousness and perception on a daily basis.  Please let me know if there is anything I can do for the cognitive science program. I might return to Georgetown for my residency and would be interested in a possible collaborative research project with your department."

"I love the idea of providing undergraduates with resources for advice on their futures. The next step (I'm finding now) can go so many directions and be so overwhelming, so the more information on future choices, the better . . . .
I'm doing some temp work right now, but hopefully will soon be pursuing some research with a neuropsychology focus. If it works out as planned, I'll give you more details and would be happy to talk to any undergrads in the future
